As concert performer, teacher, researcher and creator of new musical and cultural projects, Jordi Savall is one of the principal architects of the current revaluation of musical history. For more than thirty years, with his viola da gamba or directing one of the three ensembles he founded with Monserrat Figueras (Hespèrion XXI, La cappella Reial de Catalunya, Le Concert des Nations), he has restored an essential but previously unknown repertoire. His key contribution to Alain Corneau's film Tous les matins du monde, his busy concert life (over 140 per year) and recording schedule (six per year) and he creation of his own record label Alia Vox have shown how early music can appeal to a wide audience. Jordi Savall taught himself the viola da gamba before moving on to advanced studies at the Schola Cantorum Basilensis, where he was to take over from his teacher August Wenzinger in 1973, and still teaches courses and gives master classes. He has made over 170 recordings and won many awards. He has been appointed Artist for Peace in the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Programme, and most recently Intercultural Ambassador for the European Union.
